Wine Stopper

A Wine Stopper is a device used to seal a bottle of wine to prevent the wine from spoiling.

History

Wine bottles may be sealed with a wine stopper in order to keep the wine from spilling and to prevent oxygen from getting to, and spoiling, the wine. Traditional wine stoppers were made of cork that comes from the Cork Oak, or Quercus Suber. This is a species of oak that grows in Spain and Portugal. Today wine stoppers are made from numerous materials including metal, glass and plastic along with the traditional cork. Many modern wine stoppers are accompanied by a pump to remove as much oxygen as possible from the resealed bottle. [1]
